Change is a characteristic of life. When change is good, we delight in it, such as when a child is born or there is an exciting new opportunity in a new city. But change can, of course, also be bad: the loss of a job, a serious illness in the family, a piece of unsettling news... all of these things, and many more, can throw what we perceive as a spanner in the works. It is then time for adjustments to be made, plans to be altered and strategies to be changed.
In these situations, the first—and most important—thing which we can do is to pray for guidance during the uncertain times ahead. But God may not always give the answer immediately1. This can lead to confusion, fear and frustration within the believer. Thankfully, my pastor once shared something with me to help in such situations: while you are waiting for an answer to a prayer, you should keep on doing whatever the last things was which God told you to do.
This is a good rule-of-thumb, but not scripture. Of course, wisdom should be applied in all situations. But remember that, after a situation has turned to "hopeless" or something becomes "impossible", God is not phased, because not only is He all-powerful, but He is also totally in control. Take comfort in that and continue to serve, despite the "odds".
- 1. Although Matthew 21:22 promises us that we shall receive an answer. The reason for not getting "instant gratification" can be on of many, such as that God judges it better that we should receive our revelation through a process, rather than an event.
